Chapter 4
Michael Tyler couldn't believe what, who, he was seeingâthere she was.
Right there, between two of his own brothers and the damned sheriff of Masterson County was the one woman he had been thinking about almost every night for more than six weeks.
Just as beautiful as before. But she looked...fragile. He couldnât put his finger on it, but something was wrong.
He tensed.
Something had happened.
There was no doubt about that. Martin had that inscrutable look he got whenever he was so angry he couldn't speak. And Chandler, his normally most good-natured brother, was tense and angry. They walked next to her as if they were paid bodyguardsâand the world the threat.
Someone who didnât know them wouldnât see it, but Michael knew his brothers as well as he knew himself.
They kept shooting the woman he was trying to forget looks of concern. Martin was almost hovering, like he was ready to scoop Ms. Judith Hopewell, head social worker for Masterson County, right off her dainty little feet and carry her away. Chandler carried a single bag, like it was far too heavy for her tiny delicate hands.
Michael wiped the grease and dirt off his hands and stepped off his porch. "Martin, what's going on?"
His older brother would tell him straight. He always had before.
"We're going to have a houseguest for a few...for a while." Martin said, a warning in his tone.
One Michael didnât give a damn about heeding. He wasnât about to let some damned social worker into their home. Been there, done that. Almost lost his sister because of it. It had been nearly a decade since then, but some wounds...took a damned long time to heal. "Jude's going to be staying here."
Like hell she was, but Michael kept his damned mouth shut. He and Martin were going to have wordsâthen that woman would hightail it out of there. Chandler was so damned worried about her, he could drive her back to town to that house of hers two blocks off of Main Street.
Martin had supposedly been at a small house doing estimates today. It must have been her place. Michael took a closer look at her. Her green eyes were wide, insecure.
Terrified.
Or she wanted to look that way.
He didnât miss the way she was shaking.
She was an expert at manipulating people; all social workers were. It came with the territory. Apparently, his brothers and Joel weren't immune. Damn it. Heâd have thought Martin, at least, knew better. Martin had had almost as rough a time with the guy assigned to Maggie as Michael had.
He didnât want a social worker in his house. Especially her.
It wasnât just his house. The twins were out fixing a downed fence between their place and their uncle Philâs. Not that it would matterâif Martin and Chandler said there was a woman in trouble, the twins would turn into lugheads wanting to help, too.
Just as Michael would haveâif the woman hadnât been her.
He would be outvoted no matter how he looked at it. Damn it.
"Whatever. After you get your.
